The Flexible Novel Unit is here! (SB Community Post by Doug Waugh) The SpringBoard program is excited to announce the release of our first Flexible Novel Unit. We are posting Grade 6 as an example of what is to come by the beginning of next month. Our Flexible Novel Units (FNUs) include the following:
Here are some commonly asked questions: Do the Flexible Novel Units include new Embedded Assessments? No. The FNU activities are designed to scaffold toward the existing Embedded Assessment for each grade’s novel unit. Some of the EAs might need modifications if they are very specific to one novel, but the general end product will remain the same. Can teachers use the FNU with any novel? Since the FNUs are designed to maintain a connection to the existing Embedded Assessments and unit themes, they will work best if the teacher-selected novel has some characteristics in common with the SpringBoard-selected novel. For example, in Grade 9, a coming-of-age novel set against a historically significant backdrop (like the unit novel To Kill a Mockingbird) will require much less teacher customization and preparation than a completely different type of novel would require. You will note that we define specific characteristics of the novel to guide teacher selection for each unit, and we provide a list of suggested titles. What is the Teacher Planning Dashboard? This is much like our “Planning the Unit” …but for our FNUs. This set of teacher-facing pages provide guidance for planning instruction with the FNU. It maps out a reading plan and will highlight activities that involve significant teacher preparation, such as selecting a passage from the chosen novel to read aloud in class or crafting specific text-dependent questions. IT will include text-dependent questions stems appropriate for the grade level, and it will include the criteria for selecting a novel that will lend itself to the Embedded Assessment. What are mini-lessons? In addition to the unit specific activities that make up the core of the FNU, we are working with SpringBoard teachers to develop flexible mini-lessons on a variety of novel study topics such as these:
Would teachers be able to use a FNU multiple times in the school year with different novels? While that would technically be possible, the FNUs are not designed to be used this way. They are designed to give teachers the option of choosing a different novel from the one selected in SpringBaord while still covering the concepts and skills leading up to the novel-related Embedded Assessment. Where will teachers find the Flexible Novel Units? The will be available as PDF’s on SpringBoard Digital. This will allow teachers to print and choose the lessons they want to use!
